After days of complaining about practicing in the heat for their upcoming sports day, my little one suddenly sounded incredibly excited about having to spend his Saturday (his usual day off) at school. He looked at me with a beaming smile and said, “Mama, It’s going to be a hot day tomorrow so the teacher has asked us to bring along a hat and some juice”. Living in a juice-free house, the teacher’s words were just what my little brat needed to show off his obedience.
So why are packaged juices so bad for you?
Comes down to three simple components. Fruits contain fiber, sugar, and nutrients in their raw form. When you make fresh juice at home, you take away the fiber which leaves you with a glass of flavored sugar water…but with a lot of the nutritional value still intact.
Packaged juices, on the other hand, take it one step further to increase the shelf life of their products. The juice is heated to incredibly high temperatures which completely kills any nutrient value the fruit had. This process effectively results in turning the packaged fruit juice into JUST flavored sugar water.
So the next time your child asks for a juice, hand him a fruit and a glass of water instead.
